Healthcare is not a business industry: Minister

EHM News Bureau - Kolkata

At a foundation laying ceremony of the extension building of Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan in South Kolkata, Dr Surya Kanta Misra, the West Bengal Health and Family Welfare minister came down heavily on the private hospitals who were treating patients as their clients’ and ‘hospitals’ as an ‘industry’. He urged them to bring compassion in their treatment towards patients.

The minister said non-profit organisations like Ramakrishna Mission should come forward in the health sector as lack of infrastructure is impeding the ability of the state in providing healthcare to all. He stressed on improving the environment to help people keep good health and ward off disease. The vice-president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission Srimat Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj laid the foundation of the new building.

A six-storeyed building will be built on the land adjacent to the existing hospital at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore. The proposed building will be named after Adish Chandra Sinha, whose family donated the money for the construction of the building.
